Racial justice work is an integral part of the mission of the Social Action Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Wakefield. Last spring when the Black Lives Matter wanted to take their movement for racial equality and justice into the suburbs, the Social Action Committee met the call. The committee established and invited church and community members to join “Stand Together Tuesdays for Racial Justice”,  a peaceful demonstration each Tuesday late afternoon. Their Stand Together vigils have continued into the fall and winter with the addition of once a month Saturday morning demonstrations. Now, after a winter hiatus (or hibernation!) the Stand for Racial Justice Vigils are returning on the second Saturday of the month, 9:30am -11:30am in front of the church

Often members are asked what they hope to achieve with their weekly vigils. Along with the initial intent of supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, the committee believes a visual presence is important in being allies to the people of color in our community. Also, that when individuals gather together to stand for racial equality, this shows the community that many Wakefieldians are serious about the necessary work that needs to be done to end structural racism in our town, state, country and world. And only then will all lives truly do matter.
