Robert K Greenleaf coined the phrase “servant
leadership” in an essay he first published in 1970.
At first glance, many may inquire how can one be
both a servant AND a leader. The former is
supposedly a selfLESS being, while the latter is a
selfish being. But Greenleaf argued that to be a
true leader, one must first be a true servant. We
will explore the servant as leader and the leader
as servant by first recognizing the need for a
servant’s heart.
